1979 Topps #108 Eduardo Rodriguez

About Eduardo Rodriguez
The Brewers sold his contract to Kansas City before the 1979 season, and Rodriguez finished 4-1 with a 4.84 ERA in 29 games, though he walked more batters than he struck out. Topps still showed him with Milwaukee on 1979 card #108.
Eduardo Rodriguez was a right-handed Puerto Rican pitcher from Barceloneta who spent seven seasons in the majors, mostly out of the bullpen: 1973 to 1978 with the Milwaukee Brewers and 1979 with the Kansas City Royals. He went 42-36 with a 3.89 ERA and 32 saves. At home he was known as Volanta, a family nickname first given to his grandfather, who in 1902 publicly announced he would vote for the Volanta political party. Converted from shortstop to pitcher as a teenager, he signed with Milwaukee in November 1971 for an estimated $12,000. He reached the majors in June 1973 after one full minor league year at Danville. On September 3, 1973 he tripled in his only major league at-bat, the first hit by an American League pitcher in the designated hitter era. He also pitched in the Puerto Rican Winter League for Caguas and Mayaguez. The Royals placed him on waivers before the 1980 season and he did not return to the majors. He died in Barceloneta on March 6, 2009, his 57th birthday.
