1979 Topps #357 Jerry Augustine

About Jerry Augustine
In 1978 Augustine went 13-12 with a 4.54 ERA, his high in wins. He allowed three runs in 32 1/3 innings across four June victories and was named Brewers Pitcher of the Month. He went 3-1 against the Yankees, the eventual World Series champions. After a September 7 start, manager George Bamberger moved him to the bullpen. His 1979 Topps card is #357, with the Brewers.
Jerry Augustine was a left-handed pitcher who spent all ten of his major league seasons, 1975 to 1984, with the Milwaukee Brewers. A Wisconsin native from Kewaunee, he pitched at UW-La Crosse, where the Eagles won conference titles in 1972 and 1973, and the Brewers took him in the 15th round of the 1974 draft. He made his debut on September 9, 1975, and won his first start a week later. He worked as a starter through 1978, then moved to the bullpen, where he saved five games in 1979 and was named the Brewers' Rolaids Relief Pitcher of the Year. Designated for assignment when Milwaukee acquired Don Sutton in August 1982, he sat in the dugout beside manager Harvey Kuenn during that postseason. He finished 55-59 with a 4.23 ERA and 11 saves. Afterward he coached at UW-Milwaukee and became a studio analyst on Brewers telecasts.
