1979 Topps #358 Alan Trammell

About Alan Trammell
After batting .268 in 139 games in 1978, Trammell received an individual Detroit card on 1979 Topps #358. On June 12, 1979, he stole home against Oakland's Dave Heaverlo at Tiger Stadium. He finished that season with 17 stolen bases, 6 home runs and 50 RBIs.
Alan Trammell played shortstop for Detroit throughout a 20-season major-league career and spent 19 seasons alongside second baseman Lou Whitaker. Detroit drafted him in the second round in 1976, when he chose a $35,000 contract over college baseball offers from UCLA and Arizona State. He finished with a .285 batting average and 2,365 hits. He also hit 185 home runs and drove in 1,003 runs. He earned six All-Star selections, four Gold Gloves and three Silver Sluggers. In the 1984 World Series, he batted .450 with 9 hits and 6 RBIs against San Diego. His two 2-run homers supplied every Detroit run in the Tigers' Game 4 victory, and he received the Series MVP award. Sparky Anderson moved him into the cleanup spot in 1987 after Lance Parrish's departure. Trammell hit .343 with 205 hits as Detroit won the division. He added 28 home runs and 105 RBIs and finished second to George Bell in the AL MVP vote. After retiring in 1996, he coached in Detroit and San Diego before managing the Tigers from 2003 through 2005. He entered the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2018 alongside former teammate Jack Morris.
