Tiger Stadium drew 1,714,893, fifth in the league. Lou Whitaker won the American League Rookie of the Year Award, Ron LeFlore was named Tiger of the Year by Detroit baseball writers, and Jason Thompson went to the All-Star Game as a reserve for the second time. Future Hall of Famers Jack Morris and Alan Trammell were also on the roster. Les Moss, who caught for the Browns, Red Sox, Orioles and White Sox between 1946 and 1958, managed the Tigers to a 27-26 record in 1979, and he is the manager on team card #66.
Les Moss played 824 major league games, mostly as a backup catcher for the Browns, Orioles and White Sox, then managed in the minors, briefly led the 1979 Detroit Tigers, and coached pitchers for the Houston Astros through 1989.
