About Mark Belanger

Belanger played 134 games at shortstop for Baltimore in 1978, batting .213. His Orioles card in 1979 Topps was #65. Pitcher Steve Stone credited an evening at Mark and Dee Belanger's home with making him feel welcome on the club and contributing to his success in 1979.

Mark Belanger spent 17 seasons with Baltimore and one with the Los Angeles Dodgers, winning eight Gold Gloves at shortstop and a World Series championship with the 1970 Orioles. His tall, narrow frame earned him the nickname The Blade. Baltimore signed him out of Pittsfield High School in 1962 for $35,000, and he reached the majors as a pinch-runner on August 7, 1965. Across 18 seasons he collected 1,316 hits and batted .228. He served as the Orioles' player representative, took part in the 1981 strike negotiations and worked for the players' association after retiring. Baltimore inducted him into its team Hall of Fame in 1983.
