About Sammy Stewart
Stewart struck out 7 consecutive White Sox batters in his September 1, 1978 debut, setting a major-league debut record in Baltimore's 9-3 win. His 1979 Topps cards are Record Breakers #206 and Orioles Prospects #701. The latter was his rookie card, shared with fellow Orioles prospects Mark Corey and John Flinn. Stewart went 8-5 with a 3.52 ERA for the Orioles in 1979.
Sammy Stewart filled long-relief, spot-starting and closing roles for the Orioles before pitching for Boston and Cleveland. Baltimore signed the right-hander in 1975 after he attended Montreat Anderson Junior College. His 2.32 ERA led the American League in the strike-shortened 1981 season. He threw 9 1/3 scoreless innings during Baltimore's 1983 postseason run, including 5 innings against Philadelphia in the World Series victory. Stewart saved a career-high 13 games in 1984. The Orioles traded him to Boston for Jackie Gutierrez in December 1985. He finished 10 major-league seasons with 59 wins, 45 saves and a 3.59 ERA.
