1979 Topps #102 Mike Anderson

About Mike Anderson
Anderson rejoined the Phillies on April 28, 1979, and doubled in his first at bat. He played 79 games, mostly as a late-inning defensive replacement for Greg Luzinski in left, and hit .231. On June 27 he pitched an inning against the Cubs in an 11-4 loss, striking out the first two batters. His 1979 Topps #102 carries the Orioles.
Mike Anderson signed a letter of intent to play tight end at the University of South Carolina while at Timmonsville High School in South Carolina. Instead, the Philadelphia Phillies took him in the first round of the 1969 draft, sixth overall. His brother Kent also reached the majors as an infielder. After three minor league seasons, in which he hit .322 with 21 home runs and 241 RBIs, he reached Philadelphia at age 20 and debuted on September 2, 1971. He played nine major league seasons through 1979 for the Phillies, Cardinals and Orioles, and finished with a .246 average, 28 home runs and 134 RBIs in 721 games. The Phillies traded him to St. Louis for Ron Reed on December 9, 1975. He spent 1980 at Oklahoma City, hitting .327, and played part of 1981 in the Pittsburgh Pirates farm system before retiring. He hit .316 in the minors.
