1979 Topps #160 Mike Flanagan

About Mike Flanagan
Flanagan became the first major-league pitcher to win 20 games in 1979, getting there with a 5-1 complete game over Toronto in a September doubleheader. He credited part of his success that season to a changeup Scott McGregor taught him. He won Game 2 of the ALCS against California, started Game 1 of the World Series and went the distance in a 5-4 win over Pittsburgh, then took the loss in Game 5. His Orioles card is #160.
Mike Flanagan was a left-handed starter who pitched for the Baltimore Orioles from 1975 to 1987, for Toronto from 1987 to 1990, and again for Baltimore in relief in 1991 and 1992. He finished 167-143 with a 3.90 ERA and 1,491 strikeouts in 2,770 innings. A seventh-round Orioles pick in 1973 out of the University of Massachusetts, he won the 1979 American League Cy Young Award with a league-best 23 victories and was a member of the 1983 World Series champions. He made 157 consecutive starts before tendonitis ended the run in September 1981. In 1991 he threw an inning of a combined no-hitter against Oakland, and in 1992 he was the last Oriole to pitch at Memorial Stadium. He was named to the Orioles Hall of Fame in 1994, then served the club as pitching coach, broadcaster and executive vice president of baseball operations. He died in 2011.
