1979 Topps #37 Joe Kerrigan

About Joe Kerrigan
Baltimore used Kerrigan in 26 games in 1978, including his 2 major league starts. He went 3-1 with a 4.77 ERA and 3 saves. He struck out 41 batters in 71 2/3 innings. His 1979 card, #37, listed him with the Orioles.
Joe Kerrigan was a right-handed reliever for the Montreal Expos and Baltimore Orioles from 1976 to 1980 and a longtime pitching coach afterward. A Philadelphia native, he attended Father Judge High School and Temple University, played in the 1972 College World Series, and spent that summer with the Orleans Cardinals in the Cape Cod League. The Expos chose him in the first round of the 1974 draft. He appeared in 131 major league games. He finished 8-12 with a 3.89 ERA and 15 saves. His last game came on April 12, 1980.
Coaching began in 1983 as the Expos' bullpen coach, and he became their pitching coach in 1992 after working for three different Montreal farm teams between 1987 and 1991. He was Boston's pitching coach from 1997 to 2001 under Jimy Williams and worked with Pedro Martinez, the 1999 and 2000 Cy Young Award winner. When Williams was fired in August 2001, Kerrigan took over as manager; the Red Sox went 17-26 under him, and Grady Little replaced him during spring training in 2002. He later coached pitchers for the Phillies, was hired as the Yankees' bullpen coach in November 2005, and served as the Pirates' pitching coach from October 2008 until August 8, 2010.
