1979 Topps #237 Billy Smith

About Billy Smith
Smith's 1979 Topps Orioles card, #237, followed a .260 season. Against Cleveland on May 26, 1978, he tied the game with a home run off Rick Wise in the eighth inning, then hit a game-winning double off Wise in the ninth.
Billy Smith played second base and shortstop for California, Baltimore and San Francisco. A switch-hitter from John Jay High School in San Antonio, he was California's third-round choice in the 1971 draft. He reached the majors in 1975 and played shortstop when Nolan Ryan threw his fourth no-hitter that June. After 3 seasons with Baltimore, Smith signed a Philadelphia minor league contract in June 1980. The Giants bought his contract the following March. He finished with 234 hits and 17 home runs in 370 major league games. Smith later operated a roofing business in San Antonio from 1982 to 1987.
