1979 Topps #161 Barry Foote

About Barry Foote
The Phillies traded Foote to the Cubs for catcher Dave Rader, and Chicago made him its starter. He played a career-high 132 games, hit 16 home runs, and caught the 23-22 loss to the Phillies at Wrigley Field on May 17. Topps #161 still has him as a Phillie.
Barry Foote was a catcher who played for the Montreal Expos, Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs and New York Yankees between 1973 and 1982. Montreal took him third overall in the 1970 draft out of Smithfield-Selma High School in North Carolina, and manager Gene Mauch called him the next Johnny Bench. He won the Expos job in 1974, led National League catchers with 83 assists, and made the Topps All-Star Rookie team. Injuries made him a reserve for most of his career. In 1981 the Yankees acquired him for Tom Filer, and he homered in his first at-bat for them and played in that fall's World Series. He finished with 57 home runs in 687 games. Afterward he scouted for the Yankees, managed in the Yankees and Blue Jays systems and coached for the White Sox and Mets.
