About Bob Boone

Boone hit .283 with 12 home runs and 62 RBI in 1978, the season behind card #90, and earned his second All-Star selection and first Gold Glove. He went two for 11 in the NLCS against the Dodgers, who again beat Philadelphia three games to one. He caught 129 of his 132 games that year and played three at first base.

Bob Boone was a catcher for 19 seasons, 1972 to 1990, with the Phillies, Angels and Royals, and later managed the Royals and the Reds. A Stanford product drafted by Philadelphia in the sixth round in 1969, he was a four-time All-Star (1976, 1978, 1979, 1983) and won seven Gold Gloves. He was a defense-first catcher who committed eight errors and allowed three passed balls in 1977. He helped Philadelphia win the 1980 World Series, caught Mike Witt's perfect game for the Angels on September 30, 1984, and caught 2,225 games, a record at the time. He threw out Rickey Henderson 15 of 26 times. He retired at 42 after a broken finger in 1990 with 1,838 hits, 105 home runs and a .254 average. His father Ray Boone and sons Bret and Aaron Boone were all major leaguers and All-Stars, and he was inducted into the Philadelphia Baseball Wall of Fame in 2005.
