1979 Topps #382 Jerry Martin

About Jerry Martin
Topps printed #382 with the Phillies, but Martin had been sent to the Cubs as pitchers and catchers reported in 1979, in the deal that brought Manny Trillo, Greg Gross and Dave Rader to Philadelphia. Playing center field and batting sixth in Chicago, he appeared in 150 games, hit .272 and scored 74 runs.
Jerry Martin was a right-handed outfielder who played 11 seasons in the majors, 1974 to 1984, for the Phillies, Cubs, Giants, Royals and Mets. A basketball star at Furman, where he was the 1971 All-Southern Conference Tournament MVP, he signed with Philadelphia as an amateur free agent and hit .316 with 12 home runs and 112 RBIs for Spartanburg in 1972. He reached the Phillies in September 1974 and spent his first five seasons as a reserve outfielder, serving in 1976 as a late-inning defensive replacement for Greg Luzinski. A spring 1979 trade sent him to Chicago, where he finally started: 19 home runs and 73 RBIs in 1979, then a career-high 23 homers in 1980. He later played right field for Kansas City, hitting 15 home runs in 1982. In November 1983 he, Willie Aikens, Willie Wilson and Vida Blue were sentenced in the Royals cocaine case, and he served time in a federal facility. He closed his career with the 1984 Mets and later coached in the Phillies system, including a stretch as interim first base coach in 2008. His father, Barney Martin, pitched one game for the 1953 Reds.
