1979 Topps #317 Jose Cardenal

About Jose Cardenal
Topps pictured Cardenal with Philadelphia on 1979 card #317, but on August 2, 1979, the Phillies sold him to the Mets between games of a doubleheader involving the two teams. A knee injury and a broken left wrist limited him to 11 games with New York.
Jose Cardenal played eighteen major league seasons for nine teams, accumulating 1,913 hits, 329 stolen bases and a .275 batting average. He grew up in Matanzas, Cuba, where he played baseball with his second cousin Bert Campaneris. Cardenal entered the Giants organization and made his major league debut in 1963. His longest stay was six seasons with the Cubs, and his playing career ended with Kansas City's appearance in the 1980 World Series. He later coached for several major league organizations, including serving as the Yankees' first base coach for their 1996, 1998 and 1999 championship teams. He also worked as an adviser for the Washington Nationals.
