The story on this card
Topps #112 is the Philadelphia Phillies team card, with manager Danny Ozark. The 1978 club went 90-72 and won its third straight National League East title, a game and a half ahead of Pittsburgh. The race ended on the next-to-last day, when Philadelphia beat the Pirates in Pittsburgh. The roster included Hall of Famers Steve Carlton, Jim Kaat and Mike Schmidt. Los Angeles then beat the Phillies three games to one in the NLCS, the same result as the year before. At Veterans Stadium, the Phillie Phanatic debuted on April 25 against the Cubs. Ozark had managed the club since 1973, and it won 101 games in both 1976 and 1977.
Manager of the Philadelphia Phillies from 1973 to 1979, Ozark won three straight NL East titles from 1976 to 1978 and lost the playoffs each time. He had coached the Dodgers under Walter Alston and returned to them as a coach in 1980.
