1979 Topps #111 Roger Freed

About Roger Freed
His 1978 line was .239 with 2 home runs and 20 RBI, including a bases-clearing pinch double on April 16 that backed Bob Forsch's no-hitter against the Phillies. Card #111 arrived in 1979, the year he hit a two-out, 11th-inning grand slam off Houston's Joe Sambito on May 1 for a 7-6 win. Manager Ken Boyer sent him to Springfield later that season.
Roger Freed was an outfielder and first baseman who spent parts of eight seasons in the majors, 1970 to 1979, with Baltimore, Philadelphia, Cincinnati, Montreal and St. Louis. He won The Sporting News Minor League Player of the Year award twice, the only man to do so, the second time at Denver in 1976 with 42 home runs. In between he played the 1975 season for Monterrey in the Mexican League. He found his role as a Cardinals pinch hitter and was released in spring training of 1980. He finished with 22 home runs and a .245 average, and died in Chino, California, in January 1996 at age 49.
