1979 Topps #230 Bob Forsch

About Bob Forsch
Forsch's 1979 season ended at 11-11 with a 3.83 ERA in 33 games. He worked 218 2/3 innings, struck out 92 and completed seven games. Card #230 follows a 1978 of 233 2/3 innings, 114 strikeouts and three shutouts. On April 7, 1979, in the Astrodome, brother Ken Forsch no-hit the Braves 6-0, less than a year after Bob's own.
Bob Forsch was a right-handed starter who pitched 16 seasons, 1974 to 1989, for the St. Louis Cardinals and, at the end, the Houston Astros, finishing 168-136 with a 3.76 ERA. The Cardinals drafted him in 1968 as a third baseman, and he was converted to pitching in the minors in 1970. His 163 wins for St. Louis rank fourth in franchise history, and he is the only Cardinals pitcher with two no-hitters, the second in 1983. He won Silver Slugger awards as a pitcher in 1980 and 1987. He started for the 1982 World Series champions and pitched in the 1985 and 1987 World Series as well. He and his older brother Ken Forsch were the first brothers to each throw a major league no-hitter. St. Louis traded him to Houston in 1988. After retiring he coached in the Reds' farm system. He died on November 3, 2011, and was inducted into the Cardinals Hall of Fame in 2015.
