1979 Topps #304 Steve Swisher

About Steve Swisher
Swisher appeared in 38 games for St. Louis in 1979, catching in 33 of them, and batted .151. His 1979 Topps card is #304, with the Cardinals. The following year he played in 18 games, and late in 1980 he was sent to San Diego in a multiplayer trade.
Steve Swisher was a catcher for the Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals and San Diego Padres from 1974 to 1982 and the Cubs' representative on the 1976 National League All-Star team. He played at Ohio University, where his freshman-year team reached the College World Series, and was a first-round pick of the Chicago White Sox in June 1973. In December 1973 the White Sox sent him to the Cubs with Steve Stone and Ken Frailing in the trade that brought Ron Santo across town. He appeared in 509 big-league games and hit .216 with 20 home runs. After his playing days he managed in the minors for years, at Waterloo, Buffalo, Williamsport, Colorado Springs, Jackson, Tidewater, Binghamton, New Orleans and Reading. Hired by Reading in late 2004, he suffered a fall down a staircase that left him comatose, but he recovered enough to manage the club in 2005. His son Nick Swisher played first base in the majors.
