The story on this card
On April 29, 1978, owner August Busch handed the Cardinals to Ken Boyer, the 1964 MVP, after Vern Rapp was fired with the club at 6-11 and coach Jack Krol ran two games. Boyer's team went 62-81 and the Cardinals finished 69-93, fifth in the National League East and 21 games behind Philadelphia. Ted Simmons hit .287 with 22 home runs and 80 RBI, Keith Hernandez won a Gold Glove at first base, and Garry Templeton led the league in triples. Lou Brock appeared in 92 games and hit .221. Tom Seaver of the Reds no-hit St. Louis on June 16. Card #192 pairs the club with Boyer, who steered it to 86 wins and third place in 1979.
Ken Boyer spent 11 seasons as the Cardinals' third baseman and won the 1964 National League MVP award, with a grand slam in that year's World Series. A seven-time All-Star and five-time Gold Glover, he later managed the club, which retired his number 14.
