1979 Topps #191 Mike Norris

About Mike Norris
Norris came back to the rotation in 1979, starting 18 of his 29 games and working 146 1/3 innings. He struck out 96, completed three games and finished 5-8 with a 4.80 ERA. His 1979 Topps card, #191, also carries the Athletics.
Mike Norris was a right-handed starter who spent his career with the Oakland Athletics, pitching for them from 1975 to 1983 and again in 1990. A San Francisco native from Balboa High School, he was taken by Oakland in the first round, 24th overall, in January 1973. Through his first five seasons he went 12-25 with a 4.67 ERA. In 1980 he went 22-9 with a 2.53 ERA and 24 complete games. He pitched 284 1/3 innings, led the American League with a .209 opponents' average and won his first Gold Glove, but Baltimore's Steve Stone (25-7) took the Cy Young Award. Norris finished 15th in the MVP voting. In 1981 he went 12-9, made the All-Star team, won a second Gold Glove, threw a shutout against Kansas City in the division series and took the loss against the Yankees in the ALCS. He went 7-11 in 1982 and 4-5 in 1983, and some baseball historians and statisticians have blamed manager Billy Martin's heavy use of the 1981 staff. He returned in 1990 with a 3.00 ERA in 27 innings. His career record was 58-59 with a 3.89 ERA. He wore a distinctive green fielding glove.
