1979 Topps #378 Rob Picciolo

About Rob Picciolo
A 5-24 June sank Oakland on the way to a 54-108 finish, but Picciolo had a strong August. With Guerrero hurt, he started 27 of the team's 29 games and hit .362 for the month. That lifted his average 45 points to .279. He finished at .253 in 115 games, 105 of them at shortstop. His 1979 card is #378, listed with the Athletics.
Rob Picciolo was a shortstop and utility infielder who played nine seasons for the Oakland Athletics, Milwaukee Brewers and California Angels between 1977 and 1985. He broke in as Oakland's everyday shortstop, debuting April 9, 1977 against the Twins and starting 137 games as a rookie, and later covered second and third base as well. Walks were rare for him: 25 in 1,628 major league at-bats, and in 1980 play was stopped to hand him the ball when he drew his first walk of the season on October 2. Charlie Finley, who liked nicknames for his players, tagged him Peach. He appeared in the 1981 division series sweep of Kansas City and the ALCS loss to New York, then was traded to Milwaukee in May 1982. After playing he spent 20 years in the San Diego Padres organization, including 16 consecutive seasons on the big league staff from 1990 to 2005, the longest tenure of any coach in club history. He returned to the Angels as roving infield instructor and then bench coach under Mike Scioscia from 2010 to 2013.
