1979 Topps #295 Mitchell Page

About Mitchell Page
Page won Most Valuable Player honors at the early-1979 Caribbean Series in Puerto Rico, leading it with 2 home runs and 11 RBIs for Magallanes. Back with the A's he asked for $100,000, Finley offered $70,000, and when Page skipped exhibition games the owner suspended him and cut off his room and board. Used mostly as designated hitter, he batted .247 with 9 home runs and 42 RBIs. His #295 card has him with the Athletics.
Mitchell Page was a left-handed-hitting outfielder who played seven of his eight major league seasons with the Oakland Athletics, and the first of them is the one Oakland remembers. Held in Triple-A behind Al Oliver, Richie Zisk and Dave Parker, he reached the A's in a nine-player trade with Pittsburgh on March 15, 1977, then hit .307 with 21 home runs and 42 stolen bases. He finished second to Eddie Murray in American League Rookie of the Year voting, 12 votes to 9, and set an AL record with 26 steals in a row without being caught. Fans called him "The Rage". His production fell in the years after; he hit .141 in 1981, and his last big-league games came with the Pirates in 1984. As a coach he served as St. Louis Cardinals hitting coach from 2001 through the 2004 World Series, working with rookie Albert Pujols, and later held the same job with the Washington Nationals. He wrote The Complete Manual of Hitting and died in 2011 at age 59.
