1979 Topps #432 Dave Heaverlo

About Dave Heaverlo
Card #432 carries Heaverlo in an Oakland uniform. He appeared in 62 games for the 1979 Athletics and saved 9. He went 4-11 with a 4.20 ERA over 85 2/3 innings. He moved on to the Seattle Mariners in 1980.
Dave Heaverlo was a right-handed relief pitcher whose out pitch was a forkball. He appeared in 356 games between 1975 and 1981, all in relief, going 26-26 with 26 saves and a 3.41 ERA over 537 innings for the San Francisco Giants, Oakland Athletics and Seattle Mariners. A Washington native who graduated from Moses Lake High School and Central Washington University, he debuted for the Giants on April 14, 1975. He shaved his head because he could not stand the Arizona heat in spring training and kept his non-roster uniform number 60 to avoid changing it on his glove and cleats; the bald head brought the nickname Kojak, after the television detective. On March 15, 1978, he went to Oakland with five other players and $300,000 in the trade that sent Vida Blue to San Francisco. Heaverlo pitched his last game on September 27, 1981, for the Athletics. He later coached pitchers in Moses Lake and hosted a radio talk show, and is in the athletics halls of fame of his high school and university.
