1979 Topps #487 Miguel Dilone

About Miguel Dilone
Dilone was hitting .187 for Oakland in 1979 when he was sent to Triple-A Ogden on June 24. The Cubs bought his contract on July 4, and he worked for Chicago as a pinch runner and defensive replacement, stealing 15 bases in 38 plate appearances. His 1979 Topps card, #487, carries the Athletics.
Miguel Dilone was a switch-hitting outfielder whose speed carried him through 12 major league seasons with seven clubs: the Pirates, Athletics, Cubs, Indians, White Sox, Expos and Padres. Signed by Pittsburgh at 17, he stole 95 bases in 115 games for Class-A Western Carolinas in 1973 and was the youngest player in the National League when he came up in September 1974. The Pirates used him primarily as a pinch runner over four Septembers. His best year came with Cleveland in 1980, when he batted .341 with 180 hits and a team-record 61 stolen bases, third in the American League in both average and steals. He retired with 267 career steals and a .265 average. He also played 22 seasons in the Dominican League and held its career stolen-base record as of 2019. In 2009 a foul tip struck him in the face while he was coaching a young prospect, and he lost his left eye.
