About Mike Edwards

Edwards appeared on two Oakland cards in 1979 Topps: his rookie card, #613, and Record Breakers #201. The latter marked his two unassisted double plays on August 10, 1978, the first time an American League second baseman accomplished the feat in one game. Edwards batted .233 in 122 games for Oakland in 1979.

Mike Edwards was a right-handed-hitting second baseman for Pittsburgh and Oakland. He debuted with the Pirates in September 1977 and became Oakland's regular second baseman the following year. In 1978, he batted .273 with 27 stolen bases in 142 games. Edwards finished his four major-league seasons with 220 hits, 38 stolen bases and a .250 average. He later played for Japan's Kintetsu Buffaloes in 1983, batting .291 with 8 stolen bases in 53 games. His 46 hits that season included 6 doubles and 2 triples. Edwards and his twin brother, Marshall, had played together at Los Angeles City College and UCLA, and their brother Dave also reached the major leagues.
