About Ron Guidry
Four Guidry cards appear in the 1979 set. Cards #5 and #7 are League Leaders, the first sharing space with Gaylord Perry of the Padres and the second with Craig Swan of the Mets. Card #202 sits in the Record Breakers subset and #500 is his standard card. The 1979 season that followed brought an 18-8 record, a 2.78 ERA and 15 complete games.
Ron Guidry was a left-handed starter who spent all 14 of his major league seasons, 1975 to 1988, with the New York Yankees. A Cajun from Lafayette, Louisiana, he pitched at the University of Southwestern Louisiana before the Yankees took him in the third round of the 1971 draft. His slider, developed with Sparky Lyle, turned a bullpen arm into the ace of the 1977 and 1978 World Series champions. His 1978 season, 25-3 with a 1.74 ERA, nine shutouts and 248 strikeouts, brought a unanimous Cy Young Award and a second-place finish in the MVP vote. He made four All-Star teams (1978, 1979, 1982, 1983), won five straight Gold Gloves from 1982 to 1986, led the league with 22 wins in 1985 and took the Roberto Clemente Award in 1984. Shoulder and elbow trouble shortened the end of his career, which closed at 170-91 with a 3.29 ERA. He was named Yankees co-captain with Willie Randolph in 1986, coached the club's pitchers in 2006 and 2007, and had number 49 retired in Monument Park in 2003.
