About Jim Beattie

Beattie missed the opening-day roster in 1979 despite his postseason work the year before, and was called up by the beginning of May. He went 3-6 with a 5.21 ERA in 15 games for the Yankees. A line drive off John Mayberry's bat on June 20 sidelined him for two months, and on September 12 Carl Yastrzemski singled off him for his 3,000th hit. After the season he went to Seattle with three teammates in a trade for Ruppert Jones and Jim Lewis. His rookie card is 1979 Topps #179.

Jim Beattie was a right-handed starter who won Game 1 of the 1978 AL Championship Series and pitched a complete-game victory in Game 5 of the World Series as a rookie with the Yankees. A baseball and basketball star at South Portland High in Maine who played basketball at Dartmouth, he was a fourth-round pick in 1975 and debuted in 1978 by beating Jim Palmer. Traded to Seattle after 1979, he spent seven seasons with the Mariners, going 52-87 for his career. On September 27, 1983, he threw the first one-hitter in franchise history, beating Kansas City, and in 1984 he worked nine innings of one-hit ball against California before losing in extra innings. Shoulder tendinitis and a torn rotator cuff ended his playing days after 1986. He earned an MBA from the University of Washington, ran Seattle's farm system, then served as general manager of the Expos (1995-2001) and co-general manager of the Orioles (2003-05). He is in the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame.
