1979 Topps #114 Cliff Johnson

About Cliff Johnson
Card #114 has Johnson with the Yankees. On April 19, 1979, Reggie Jackson's teasing led to a clubhouse fight between Johnson and Goose Gossage, who tore thumb ligaments and missed three months. Owner George Steinbrenner fined both men, and Johnson was traded to Cleveland about two months later. Across both clubs he finished with 20 home runs and 67 RBI in 100 games.
Cliff Johnson was a 6-foot-4 right-handed power hitter who played 15 major league seasons, 1972 to 1986, with the Astros, Yankees, Indians, Cubs, Athletics, Blue Jays and Rangers. A San Antonio catcher from Wheatley High School, he was Houston's pick in the 1966 draft and debuted September 13, 1972. He split time between catcher, first base and outfield before becoming mostly a designated hitter. Traded to New York during 1977, he was on the Yankees' 1977 and 1978 World Series winners. He held the major league record for pinch-hit home runs, 20, until Matt Stairs passed it in 2010. He spent his last years in Toronto, retiring September 30, 1986, with a .258 average, 196 home runs and 699 RBI in 1369 games.
