1979 Topps #60 Mickey Rivers

About Mickey Rivers
#60 lists Rivers with the Yankees, but New York traded him to Texas in the middle of the 1979 season. Across both clubs he hit .293 with 9 home runs and 156 hits. In 1980 he had 210 hits for the Rangers, setting a single-season club record.
Mickey Rivers was a left-handed center fielder and leadoff hitter who played 15 seasons, 1970 to 1984, for the Angels, Yankees and Rangers. A Miami native who attended Miami Dade Community College, he was known as Mick the Quick and was originally signed by the Atlanta Braves. He retired with a .295 average, 1,660 hits and 267 steals. When Reggie Jackson told a reporter he had an IQ of 160, Rivers answered, "Out of what, a thousand?" His final major league game came on September 30, 1984, when the Rangers lost 1-0 to Mike Witt's perfect game for the Angels. After baseball he trained racehorses in his native Florida. In 2007 he was honored with teammates from the 1977 champions at the Yankees' Old Timers Game.
