1979 Topps #32 Jerry Mumphrey

About Jerry Mumphrey
A separated shoulder, suffered diving for a fly ball in an exhibition game, kept Mumphrey out of the lineup until the Cardinals' eleventh game of 1979 and left him in another platoon. He still hit .295 in 124 games, with 339 at-bats, the fewest since his 1975 call-up. On August 10 he went 5-for-9 in a doubleheader against the Cubs, including an inside-the-park home run. He asked for a trade and went to Cleveland on December 7 with John Denny for Bobby Bonds. His Cardinals card is #32.
Jerry Mumphrey was a switch-hitting outfielder who played 15 major league seasons, 1974 to 1988, for the Cardinals, Padres, Yankees, Astros and Cubs. A fourth-round pick from Chapel Hill High School in Tyler, Texas, in 1971, he stole 22 bases as a 1976 rookie and spent three more years in St. Louis in a crowded outfield, mostly as a part-timer. In 1980 he hit .298 with 52 steals for San Diego, one of three Padres with 50 or more that year alongside Gene Richards and Ozzie Smith, the first such trio on one major league club. He hit .307 for the 1981 Yankees, who reached the World Series, and .300 in 1982. Houston acquired him for Omar Moreno in August 1983, and he was the Astros' lone All-Star in 1984 with 83 RBI. With the Cubs from 1986 he worked as a fourth outfielder and batted .333 with 13 home runs in 1987. He retired after 1988 with a .289 career average and 174 stolen bases.
