1979 Topps #101 Roy Howell

About Roy Howell
Howell hit 15 home runs and drove in 72, the second-highest totals on the Blue Jays, while batting .247 in 138 games, and the team named him its Player of the Year. A three-run homer off Boston's Bill Campbell on May 26 turned a deficit into a 7-6 win. Topps put him at #101 with Toronto.
Roy Howell was a left-handed-hitting third baseman who played 11 major league seasons, 1974 to 1984, for the Texas Rangers, Toronto Blue Jays and Milwaukee Brewers. Texas took him fourth overall in the 1972 draft out of Lompoc High School in California, and he reached the majors in September 1974 under Billy Martin. He became the Blue Jays' everyday third baseman in 1977 and made the 1978 American League All-Star team. He signed with Milwaukee as a free agent in December 1980 and played in the 1981 division series and the 1982 pennant and World Series run. He finished with a .261 average, 80 home runs and 454 RBI in 1112 games. A stranger shot him in the left arm on the last day of deer season in the offseason after he signed with Texas, and the nickname Target stuck for the rest of his career. He later managed in the Atlantic League and, in 2014, the Tacoma Rainiers.
