About Rick Cerone

With Ashby gone, Cerone became the full-time Toronto catcher in 1979 and played 136 games, hitting .239 with seven home runs. His 61 RBI were fourth on the club, and he threw out 41 percent of runners trying to steal. He hit .261 in the second half, and card #152 shows him with Toronto.

Rick Cerone was a catcher who played 18 major league seasons, 1975 to 1992, for the Indians, Blue Jays, Yankees, Braves, Brewers, Red Sox, Mets and Expos, batting .245 with 59 home runs in 1,329 games. A Newark native and Seton Hall star, he was the seventh overall pick of the 1975 draft by Cleveland. Cleveland traded him to the expansion Toronto Blue Jays in December 1976. Acquired by the Yankees in November 1979 after the death of Thurman Munson, he hit .277 with 14 home runs and 85 RBI in 1980, finished seventh in American League MVP voting and threw out 52 percent of runners. He then won an arbitration case against the Yankees and played in the 1981 World Series. He later called Yankees games on WPIX and founded the independent Newark Bears in 1998.
