1979 Topps #182 Tim Johnson

About Tim Johnson
Johnson's last season was 1979, spent entirely with the Blue Jays. He hit .186 in 43 games, with 16 hits in 86 at bats and six RBI. He played 25 games at second base and nine at third, and appeared in his final game on September 28. Card #182 shows him in Toronto colors.
Tim Johnson was a shortstop and utility infielder who played seven seasons in the majors, 1973 to 1979, and later managed the Toronto Blue Jays. The Dodgers signed him as a free agent in 1967, and Milwaukee acquired him for Rick Auerbach just as the 1973 season began. He started at shortstop nearly every day that year, then lost the job to Robin Yount in 1974 and moved into a utility role. The Brewers traded him to Toronto during 1978, and he retired after 1979 with a .223 average in 516 games. He then scouted, coached and managed in the minors for the Dodgers, Expos, Red Sox and Cubs. Toronto named him manager for 1998, and he led the club to an 88-74 record and third place in the AL East. After he admitted in November 1998 that stories of his Vietnam War service were invented, the Blue Jays fired him on March 17, 1999. He then managed for years in the Mexican League and in independent ball.
