1979 Topps #293 Jerry Garvin

About Jerry Garvin
Garvin worked mostly in relief in 1979 and made 8 appearances for Toronto, one of them a start. His record that year was 0-1 with a 2.78 ERA. He spent time on the disabled list that season and was reactivated on September 1. Topps numbered his 1979 card #293.
Jerry Garvin was a left-handed pitcher who spent his entire six-year major league career, 1977 to 1982, with the Toronto Blue Jays. Raised in Merced, California, he was drafted by the Orioles in 1973, did not sign, and signed with the Twins after the January secondary draft. As a Toronto rookie in 1977 he won four games by the end of April, the first rookie to do so, and finished 10-18 with 34 starts, a club rookie record. He became known for his pickoff move, and his 26 pickoffs that year form an unofficial major league record. He also gave up 33 home runs. After moving to the bullpen he appeared in a club-record 61 games in 1980, saving 8 with a 2.29 ERA. Sold to the St. Louis Cardinals in January 1983, he was cut in spring training and later went into real estate.
