About Dave Lemanczyk

On April 24, 1979, Lemanczyk pitched a 2-0 shutout of Texas, his first in the majors, with Pat Putnam's third-inning leadoff single the only hit. On July 28 he carried a perfect game through five innings and a no-hitter through six before Lou Whitaker singled, and settled for his third shutout. A nerve inflammation in his back, which surfaced in May, had left him without normal feeling in his right leg by late June, and he finished 8-10 with a 3.71 ERA. His Blue Jays card is #207.

Dave Lemanczyk was a 6-foot-4 right-handed starter from Syracuse, New York, who pitched eight seasons, 1973 through 1980, for the Detroit Tigers, Toronto Blue Jays and California Angels. The Tigers drafted him in the 16th round in 1972 out of Hartwick College, where he also played basketball. Toronto took him in the 1976 expansion draft, and in 1977 he tied the major league record of 13 wins for an expansion-team pitcher and was named the club's Pitcher of the Year. He represented the Blue Jays at the 1979 All-Star Game without pitching in it. A nerve problem in his back ended his best stretch, and he retired after 1980 at 37-63 with a 4.62 ERA in 185 games. Hartwick put him in its Athletics Hall of Fame in 1995, and he entered the Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame in 2006. He later ran a baseball school on Long Island.
