The story on this card
Joe Altobelli's 1978 Giants won 89 games and finished third in the NL West, six games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers, up from 75-87 in 1977. They played their 19th season at Candlestick Park and set a major league record by winning 42 games by a single run. Willie McCovey, a Hall of Famer, played first base in 108 games and hit 12 home runs. Vida Blue had arrived from Oakland before the season in a multi-player trade after Commissioner Bowie Kuhn vetoed Charlie Finley's attempt to send him to Cincinnati for lesser talent and cash. Topps combined the club and its manager on team card #356.
Joe Altobelli played 166 games as a first baseman and outfielder for Cleveland and Minnesota, then managed the San Francisco Giants from 1977 to 1979 and the 1983 World Series champion Baltimore Orioles. Rochester's Red Wings retired his number 26.
