About Lee Mazzilli

Mazzilli's July 1979 collision with right fielder Dan Norman at Dodger Stadium came as both chased a line drive from Davey Lopes, who circled the bases for an inside-the-park home run. Lopes said Mazzilli looked as though "a tank hit him." Mazzilli was held overnight for observation with a bruised cheek and missed three games. His 1979 Topps card is #355, printed with the Mets. Late that season the Mets began experimenting with him at first base. He hit .302 right-handed and .306 left-handed for the year.

Lee Mazzilli was a switch-hitting outfielder and first baseman who played 14 seasons, 1976 through 1989, mostly for the New York Mets, with stops in Texas, the Yankees, Pittsburgh and Toronto. A Brooklyn native and a multiple national youth speedskating champion, he was the 14th overall pick of the 1973 draft out of Lincoln High School. He debuted on September 7, 1976, and pinch-hit a two-out, two-run home run off Kent Tekulve soon after. His best season was 1979, when he hit .303 with 181 hits, 79 RBI and 34 steals. In the All-Star Game in Seattle he tied the score with a home run and drew the bases-loaded walk that decided the 7-6 National League win. He returned to the Mets in 1986 and appeared in that year's NLCS and World Series. He later coached the Yankees and managed the Baltimore Orioles in 2004 and 2005.
