1979 Topps #172 Mike Bruhert

About Mike Bruhert
Bruhert's rookie card, #172, is a single-player Mets issue that followed a 1978 season of 27 games, 22 of them starts. He went 4-11 with a 4.78 ERA and 56 strikeouts. His best outing was a four-hit, five-strikeout shutout of the Phillies on September 17, his lone complete game.
Mike Bruhert was a 6-foot-6 right-hander from Queens who pitched in the majors only in 1978, for the New York Mets. He won one game in four years at Christ the King Regional High School in Middle Village, then scooped ice cream at a Carvel and pitched for a local sandlot team. Success in the Queens-Nassau Summer League earned him a tryout at Shea Stadium and a Mets contract. Soon after signing he began dating Gil Hodges' daughter Irene, and the two were engaged by late 1972. The Phillies took him in the Rule 5 draft in November 1972 but returned him after spring training. After seven seasons in the Mets' farm system he debuted on April 9, 1978, in the second game of a doubleheader against Montreal, and took the loss despite six strong innings. In 1979 the Mets sent him and Bob Myrick to Texas for Dock Ellis. He finished at Columbus in the Yankees system, where he spent 1981 and 1982, and became pitching coach at Fordham.
