The story on this card
The 1978 Mets went 66-96 under Joe Torre and finished sixth in the National League East, 24 games behind the Phillies. A crowd of 11,736 came to the opener at Shea, and Jerry Koosman, the Opening Day winner, won two more games the rest of the season against 15 losses. Pat Zachry went 10-4 and was the club's lone All-Star, but he broke his left foot kicking a dugout step on July 24, the day Pete Rose extended his hitting streak to 37 games at Shea. Craig Swan took over as ace and led the league with a 2.43 ERA, and John Stearns set a National League record for catchers with 25 stolen bases. Card #82 in the 1979 Topps set is the Mets team card with Torre.
Joe Torre was a nine-time All-Star catcher and infielder who won the 1971 National League MVP award with St. Louis, then managed the Yankees to four World Series titles. He entered the Hall of Fame in 2014.
