1979 Topps #154 Jim Gantner

About Jim Gantner
Gantner played 70 games in 1979 and batted .284, mostly at third base with 22 games at second. On August 29, in a blowout against Kansas City, he pitched an inning of relief, gave up two hits, and nearly got ejected arguing balls and strikes. His #154 card is a Brewers issue.
Jim Gantner spent all 17 of his major league seasons, 1976 through 1992, with the Milwaukee Brewers, most of them at second base. A Wisconsin native from Fond du Lac, he played at Wisconsin-Oshkosh and was a 12th-round pick in 1974. His first big-league at-bat came against Mark Fidrych on September 3, 1976, and on October 3 he pinch-ran for Hank Aaron in Aaron's final game. As the second baseman on the 1982 American League champions he scored the winning run in Game 5 of the ALCS against California, then went 8-for-24 in the seven-game World Series loss to St. Louis. He hit .274 with 1,696 hits and 47 home runs, was named team MVP in 1984, and is on the Brewers Wall of Honor.
