About Carney Lansford
After batting .294 with 20 stolen bases in 1978, Lansford appeared on his rookie card, 1979 Topps #212, with the California Angels. He then scored 114 runs and hit 19 home runs as California won the AL West in 1979. Against Baltimore in the ALCS, he collected 5 hits and drove in 3 runs.
Carney Lansford spent 10 seasons at third base for Oakland after playing for the Angels and Red Sox. As a youngster in Santa Clara, California, he helped his team reach the 1969 Little League World Series final. The Angels drafted him in the third round in 1975; he reached the majors after batting .332 at Double-A El Paso in 1977. A December 1980 trade sent him to Boston, where his .336 average won the American League batting title the following season and he earned a Silver Slugger. Boston dealt him to Oakland in December 1982 in the trade that brought Tony Armas and Jeff Newman to the Red Sox. Lansford made the 1988 All-Star team and matched his .336 batting average in 1989, adding a career-high 37 stolen bases. In Oakland's World Series sweep of San Francisco that fall, he hit .438 with a home run and 4 RBI. He played on 3 consecutive pennant winners from 1988 through 1990. A snowmobile accident limited him to 5 games in 1991. He returned for one final season, reaching 2,000 hits with a home run against Texas on June 13, 1992.
