1979 Topps #402 Paul Hartzell

About Paul Hartzell
Mostly a reliever in 1978, Hartzell pitched in 54 games and saved six. He still started 12 times and completed five of those starts. He went 6-10 with a 3.44 ERA, the best among Angels pitchers with more than 100 innings. On February 3, 1979, they sent him to Minnesota with Dave Engle, Brad Havens and Ken Landreaux for Rod Carew. His 1979 Topps #402 still listed the Angels.
Paul Hartzell was a 6-foot-5 right-hander who worked as both starter and reliever for the California Angels (1976-78), Minnesota Twins (1979), Baltimore Orioles (1980) and Milwaukee Brewers (1984). A Pennsylvania native, he pitched for Lehigh University, and in the summer of 1973 he went 15-0 with a 0.48 ERA for the Johnny's amateur club in Baltimore and was MVP of the AAABA tournament in Johnstown. In 1975 he set school records with 92 innings and 10 complete games and posted a 1.66 ERA; the Roger S. Penske/Lehigh Athletics Hall of Fame inducted him in 1998. The Angels drafted him in the 10th round in 1975. Hartzell relied on a sinker, a slider and control, and was known as a ground-ball pitcher. He started 77 of his 170 games and went 27-39. His career ERA was 3.90, with 22 complete games and 12 saves. Injuries that began in 1979, which he attributed in part to moving between relieving and starting, effectively ended his career. He retired in July 1981, returned in 1984 and worked at every level of professional ball that year, ending with four games for Milwaukee. He graduated from Lehigh in 1975 with a degree in mechanical engineering.
