1979 Topps #368 Don Aase

About Don Aase
Aase went 9-10 with a 4.81 ERA in 1979, starting 28 of his 37 games as the Angels reached their first postseason. In Game Three of the ALCS against Baltimore on October 5 he relieved Frank Tanana and worked the last four innings, and the Angels won in the bottom of the ninth, giving him the first postseason victory in franchise history. His Topps card that year is #368, with the Angels.
Don Aase was a right-handed pitcher who worked 13 big league seasons for the Red Sox, Angels, Orioles, Mets and Dodgers, starting 91 of his 448 games and saving 82. A sixth-round Red Sox pick in 1972 out of Savanna High School in Anaheim, he opened his pro career 0-10 at Williamsport, then led the Carolina League in 1974 with 17 wins and a 2.34 ERA. He finished 66-60 with a 3.80 ERA in the majors. With the Angels he moved from the rotation to the bullpen in mid-1980 and never started again. Elbow reconstruction in October 1982, among the earliest operations of the Tommy John type, kept him out for almost two years. He set the Orioles' single-season record with 34 saves in 1986, was named to that year's American League All-Star team and earned the save in the game. He retired after the 1990 season with the Dodgers.
