1979 Topps #339 Ron Jackson

About Ron Jackson
California traded Jackson and Danny Goodwin to Minnesota for Dan Ford after 1978. When the Twins sent Rod Carew to the Angels, first base opened for Jackson. He played 159 games in 1979, 157 of them at first base. He set career highs with 158 hits, 40 doubles and 14 home runs. His .9943 fielding percentage at first broke Carew's Twins record. He underwent surgery in October to remove bone fragments from his left wrist. Card #339 still shows him with California.
Ron Jackson played first and third base for the Angels, Twins, Tigers and Orioles between 1975 and 1984, then became a hitting coach. The Angels drafted him in the second round in 1971, 37th overall, from Wenonah High School in Birmingham, Alabama. Jackson later recalled receiving 200 football scholarship offers before choosing baseball. He debuted on September 12, 1975, and finished with a .259 average, 56 home runs and 342 RBIs over 10 seasons. His only postseason appearance came in the 1982 ALCS, when he had a hit in his lone at-bat for California. Nolan Ryan gave him the nickname Papa Jack after hearing that Jackson had become the father of a baby boy. After coaching in the Brewers, Dodgers and White Sox systems, Jackson was named Boston's hitting coach on December 27, 2002. He held the post when the 2004 Red Sox won their first World Series in 86 seasons. He later coached the Round Rock Express, Houston's top affiliate, from 2007 to 2009.
