About Dave Roberts

Card #342 carries the San Diego name, but the Padres sent him and Oscar Gamble to Texas for Kurt Bevacqua, Mike Hargrove and Bill Fahey. His 1978 began in the minors after Rick Sweet won the backup catcher's job. San Diego recalled him at the end of May with a .267 average in 36 games, and he finished at .216 in 54 games, making his first major league appearances in the outfield.

Dave Roberts was a third baseman, second baseman and later backup catcher who played parts of ten seasons between 1972 and 1982 for the San Diego Padres, Texas Rangers, Houston Astros and Philadelphia Phillies. The Padres made the Oregon product the number one pick of the June 1972 draft and signed him the next day. He was in a game that same day, becoming the sixth player to go straight to the majors after being drafted. His best year came in 1973, when he hit .286 with 21 home runs and 64 RBI. He spent all of 1976 in Hawaii and was a reserve in San Diego in 1977 and 1978. After a trade to Texas he played every position but shortstop and pitcher in 1979 and appeared in 101 games in 1980. He finished with Houston in 1981 and Philadelphia in 1982, retiring with a .239 average and 49 home runs. He managed Eugene in the Northwest League in 1984 and coached first base for Cleveland in 1987. The Oregon Sports Hall of Fame inducted him in 1994.
