1979 Topps #343 Ed Glynn

About Ed Glynn
Glynn's 1979 began in the Mets' Triple-A system at Tidewater, where he made 17 relief appearances before his recall. His National League debut came June 1 with a save, a scoreless 11th inning against the Braves in a 5-4 win. He closed the year with 46 games, all in relief, and a 3.00 ERA over 60 innings. His seven saves were a career high. His 1979 Topps card, #343, is printed with the Tigers.
Ed Glynn was a 6 ft 2 in left-handed pitcher who worked 175 big-league games between 1975 and 1985 for the Detroit Tigers, New York Mets, Cleveland Indians and Montreal Expos, all but eight of them in relief. He grew up in Flushing, Queens, and sold hot dogs at Shea Stadium during Mets games while a student at Francis Lewis High School. When he later pitched there as a Met, the team presented him with an official Shea hot dog in a pre-game ceremony. Detroit signed him as an undrafted free agent on September 25, 1971, and he debuted on September 19, 1975, striking out Fred Lynn in relief against Boston. The Mets acquired him in spring training of 1979, and he spent all of 1980 in their bullpen. In 1982 with Cleveland he worked a career-high 47 games and won five. He finished 12-17 with a 4.25 ERA and 12 saves. He struck out 184 batters in 264 2/3 innings.
