About Derrel Thomas

In 1979 Thomas played 141 games for the Dodgers, 119 of them in the outfield. He hit .256 with 18 steals. Dusty Baker grew fond of him, while teammate Reggie Smith said Thomas did things that made it easy to hate him. Card #679 lists him with the Padres.

Derrel Thomas was a switch-hitting infielder-outfielder who played 15 seasons, 1971 to 1985, for Houston, San Diego, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Montreal, California and Philadelphia. He hit .249 with 43 home runs in 1,597 games. He played every position except pitcher at least once, starting as a second baseman and shortstop and spending most of his Dodgers years in the outfield. A Los Angeles native out of Dorsey High School, he was the first overall pick of the January 1969 draft, taken by the Astros. He wore #30 in honor of his idol, Maury Wills. He was a member of the Dodgers team that won the 1981 World Series. After playing he was the first manager of the Boise Hawks in 1987, coached high school ball in Los Angeles, and later represented the Dodgers through their Legend Bureau.
