The story on this card
With the 1978 Padres, Beswick had one hit in 20 at-bats, scored twice and played the outfield in six games. Card #725 is the San Diego entry in the 1979 Topps Prospects subset, which he shares with Steve Mura and Broderick Perkins. It is the rookie card for all three. Jim Beswick, a switch-hitting outfielder from Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania, played 17 games for the 1978 San Diego Padres, mostly as a pinch hitter and pinch runner, then spent 1979 through 1983 in the minors before his American career ended at 25.
Mura made 5 appearances for San Diego in 1978 before working 73 innings with a 3.08 ERA and 2 saves in 1979. He appeared in 38 games, 5 of them starts. The Padres Prospects rookie card in 1979 Topps, #725, paired him with Jim Beswick and Broderick Perkins. San Diego pitcher Steve Mura drove in 8 runs in 1980, collecting 7 hits in 51 at-bats. On the mound that season, he won 8 games and struck out 109 batters.
Perkins debuted with San Diego on July 7, 1978, and hit .240 with 2 home runs and 33 RBI that season. He shared the Padres Prospects rookie card, 1979 Topps #725, with Jim Beswick and Steve Mura, both listed with San Diego. In 1979 he batted .264 in 57 games. On September 26, 1980, Padres first baseman Broderick Perkins took Ozzie Smith's throw on Steve Yeager's sixth-inning grounder. The out gave Smith his 602nd assist, breaking the single-season record for shortstops.
