About Bill O'Hara
Bill O'Hara (William Alexander O'Hara), a Toronto-born outfielder, was one of the relatively few Canadians in the deadball-era majors. He turned pro in the early 1900s and knocked around the high minors — including a stint with the Eastern League's Baltimore Orioles from 1905 to 1908 — before John McGraw brought him to the New York Giants. O'Hara debuted on April 15, 1909, at age 27, and played most of that lone full season in center field, batting .236 with 85 hits and a team-useful 31 stolen bases in 115 games. A left-handed hitter and right-handed thrower, he showed the speed McGraw prized but not enough bat to stick; after a nine-game trial with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1910 (going 3-for-20), his big-league career was over. Across two seasons he hit .232 with 88 hits and 32 RBIs in 124 games. O'Hara returned to the minors, spending several more seasons in the International League, notably with his hometown Toronto Maple Leafs. He is a common, non-star subject in the T206 set, valued mainly by collectors chasing the full 524-card checklist. He died in 1931 in Jersey City, New Jersey.
