About Chappie Charles
Raymond Charles - born Charles Shuh Achenbach in Phillipsburg, New Jersey, on March 25, 1881 - was a right-handed infielder remembered mainly as a T206 subject rather than for his brief big-league record. He reached the majors from the Tri-State League's Williamsport Millionaires, where he batted .280 in 1907, and debuted with the St. Louis Cardinals on April 15, 1908, at age 27. As a rookie he was a busy utilityman, appearing at second base, shortstop, and third base and briefly serving as St. Louis's regular second baseman. Late in 1909 he was dealt to the Cincinnati Reds, finishing his major-league run in 1910. Over 237 games he hit just .219 with 186 hits, one home run, and 51 RBIs, a light-hitting glove man. He later played minor-league ball for Milwaukee, San Francisco, and Cuba's Matanzas club. His T206 card, a St. Louis "350 Only" print found across many back brands, keeps his name alive with collectors. He died in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, on August 4, 1959.
